Good to know
How the Philippine Stock Exchange groups its listed companies, and what those groupings are useful for.
The PSE classifies listed companies into six main sectors: Financials, Industrial, Holding Firms, Property, Services, and Mining and Oil. Exchange-traded funds and small and medium enterprise board listings sit outside those six and are shown separately above.
A holding firm owns controlling stakes in operating businesses rather than running one itself, and the Philippine market has an unusual number of them. Because a single conglomerate can span banking, property and utilities at once, the exchange gives them their own sector instead of forcing each into the industry of whichever subsidiary is largest.
By combined market capitalisation the Holding Firms and Property sectors have historically been the heaviest, though the order shifts with prices. Each card above shows that sector's current combined market cap and company count, so the ranking is visible directly rather than fixed in prose.
Companies in one sector tend to rise and fall together, because the same interest rates, commodity prices or consumer conditions hit all of them. Owning five stocks from one sector gives you far less diversification than the number of holdings suggests, which is what the correlation view is for. See how sectors move together →
