A fall of 20% or more from a market's recent peak, by the conventional definition. It is a description of what has already happened rather than a forecast: the threshold is only crossed well after a decline is underway, and nothing about reaching it says how long the fall continues or when it reverses. A shallower fall is usually called a correction.
